What Is Wellness?

In the simplest terms, wellness can be defined as a process in which you become aware of your choices and make better decisions to lead a fulfilling, healthy and nurturing life. It is known as a state of well-being where your social, physical and mental health is functioning at their best. Wellness is not just about freeing yourself from disease, but also ensuring growth and change that allows you to adopt and evolve. Wellness can be divided into many dimensions like physical wellness, spiritual wellness, emotional wellness, social wellness, intellectual wellness, occupational wellness and environmental wellness.

Social wellness involves factors like performing social roles in different settings and regularly engaging in activities, hobbies and events that improve your sociability among friends, family and community. Occupational wellness involves performing well and enhancing your career with the right organization. Intellectual wellness involves understanding and exploring new ideas that expand your knowledge. Physical wellness refers to a healthy body, regular exercises, eating the right foods and seeking medical help when necessary.

Emotional wellness includes understanding and handling of stress in an effective manner and exploring new ways to handle distressing situations. Environmental wellness includes respecting and admiring nature and taking part in activities that help you remain green. Lastly, spiritual wellness involves developing and adhering to a set of beliefs that prevent you from straying.
