What Is Mental Health?

Mental health can be defined as the successful functioning and performance of multiple mental functions. Excellent mental health is often an indicator of fulfilling interpersonal relationships, productivity, the strength and flexibility to cope with difficult situations, and the ability to make changes whenever necessary. Emotional or mental health can also refer to your individual actions, thoughts, and feelings, especially pertaining to stressful and challenging situations.

While different cultures have different expectations and markers for mental health, it is not as simple as the absence of such problems. Good mental health includes a sense of well-being, self-confidence, self-esteem, contentment, and goodwill among many other indicators. It also refers to resilience, flexibility, balance, and self-realization in your life. If you have the ability to enjoy life and engage in fulfilling and entertaining activities, you can say you enjoy good mental health. Mental health is also referred to well-rounded individuals who pay attention to their development in terms of intellect, creativity, mind, spirit and body.

Good mental health also refers to enjoying balance in life, whether comparing work and home, rest and exercise, or sociability and solitude. With the ability to take care of yourself and those around you, good mental health is something that comes with considerable discipline.
