What is Depression?

Depression is a mental condition that is typically associated with poor mood. Individuals may become depressed for a number of reasons that generally relate to the lifestyles they lead, and the environment they place themselves in. An individual who suffers from depression generally experiences low levels of self-esteem and feelings of helplessness. Other commonly associated symptoms are restlessness, agitation, aggression, anxiety, and guilt. People may suffer from varying degrees of depressions. In many cases, it may be extremely difficult to ascertain whether an individual is suffering from a mental disorder like depression. However, in other cases, the condition may be more overt.

A person who is suffering from depression may experience physiological manifestations of the condition as well. Generally, a depressed individual will experience high levels of fatigue and may sleep excessively. Depressed individuals often suffer from thoughts of suicide and poor self-worth. It is extremely important to understand though, that depression is not the same as being in a depressed state. A person is said to be clinically depressed when they suffer from prolonged and constant periods of low mood and self-worth. Medical professionals may prescribe medication like anti-depressants depending on the degree of the condition. Changes in lifestyle can also contribute to the elimination of the mental disorder.
